Repeat, The Trend Is Your Friend

Throughout my trading career, two things of have stuck in my mind that I learned a long time ago on the floors of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. I was trading for my own account and a select few customers in a space that was both hostile and friendly at the same time.

The first was, "the trend is your friend." Trends tend to persist longer than most people expect. Just look at the recent bullish trend in the equity markets that has been going on now for six years. By any mark in history this is an old and tired bull market. Only one time in history did a bull market trend ever extend to seven years. As they say when you climb Mount Everest, we are now in thin air.

"The trend is your friend" is an amazing thing to remember when you are trading because that is where the big money is made.

The next saying I learned as a young trader in the pits of Chicago was, Continue reading "Repeat, The Trend Is Your Friend"

My 10 Golden Rules of Trading

Even though 2014 has just begun, so far it has been difficult and frustrating for most investors and traders. One only has to look Apple's (NASDAQ:AAPL) recent performance as a prime example of how 2014 is going to be a very different year from 2013.

Today, I want to share with my "10 Golden Rules of Trading" that never go out of style. Why? These rules are the universal truths of the marketplace. To ignore them you could be condemning your portfolio to failure.

While I did not invent all of these rules myself, I did discover them the hard way. My discovery was painful, expensive, and brutal as I made practically every mistake in the book, before finding success in the markets.

Incorporating these "10 Golden Rules of Trading" into your own strategy can help you down the path to success in the markets.

1) Have a Game Plan - Figure out why you’re getting into the market and, more importantly, how to get out if you’re wrong. Continue reading "My 10 Golden Rules of Trading"

Reversion To The …. Blown Account

The markets have been trending nicely of late and one could argue it has been since the beginning of the year. For those who aspire to use the most over-hyped phrase in trading, ‘the trend is your friend’, the markets have provided some interesting trading opportunities, even if you couldn’t catch them all.

On the other hand, different trading styles are having a tough time of late. Strategies using a ‘reversion to the mean’ concept can at times be like trying to catch a falling knife.  Day traders using tools such as Bollinger bands, keltner channels and even some market profile concepts are finding winning trades to be a tough go. These methodologies that some diehards claim to be an ATM machine during summer doldrums or December holidays are finding it frustrating of late and landing continuous stop-losses due to a failure of price to reverse.

The challenge I see when mentoring traders is their inability to identify the type of market as well as  adjust their trading style when they do recognize them. Traders tend to be loyal to their strategies; just like a dog to their master. Why not? These methodologies have proven beneficial to them over time. Continue reading "Reversion To The …. Hello traders I’m Alan Knuckman, Senior Market Strategist. I can be seen every week on financial television networks such as CNBC, Bloomberg, FOX Business and Reuters. I’m blogging today about my favorite trading strategy and my weekly trend breakouts for the week of November 7th.

With over 20 years plus experience in the markets, it has been proven to me that the real money is made on established trends.  Chasing turns and trying to pick tops or bottoms is extremely dangerous and only a gamble at best.  Financial success on the other hand is about repeatedly identifying high probability candidates and taking a chunk out of the proven market momentum.
