The big news today is that Amgen (NASDAQ:AMGN) has agreed to buy Onyx Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:ONXX) for $10.4 billion. Amgen, the world's biggest biotechnology company, was missing from one of the biggest and fastest growing markets, cancer drugs. With the acquisition of Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Amgen will gain access to the company's three anticancer treatments. The big news today of course is the announcement from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) CEO, Steve Ballmer, that he's going to retire within the next 12 months. The news was enough to send the stock of Microsoft up over 7%, which is good news for shareholders.
In my opinion, one of the major reasons why the stock of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) has been unable to get going over the last decade is its failure to execute on any of the new technologies. Whether its online, mobile, phones, tablets or Windows 8, all of these efforts proved to be disappointments to investors and the market in general. This morning Steve Ballmer announced his retirement as CEO of Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) within 12 months. Mr. Ballmer owns about 4% of Microsoft and has been with the company for the past 33 years, but for the past 10 years, has missed many of the latest moves in technology.
