Today's Video Newsletter: Is Carl Icahn using our Trade Triangle technology?

Hello traders everywhere! Adam Hewison here, co-founder of MarketClub with your mid-day market update for Friday, the 8th of March.

MR. ICAHN, THANKS FOR YOUR VALIDATION
It seems that every time our Trade Triangles signal a move in the market, Mr. Icahn follows suit a little bit later. Coincidence? Perhaps. If you look at some of Mr. Icahn's recent announcements, you may get to see a pattern. A couple of days ago we talked about TransOcean, the next day Mr. Icahn fires off a letter to TransOcean about its poor capital allocation and capital structure. We signaled back in December that we received a bullish Trade Triangle signal in Netflix, next month in January we see Mr. Icahn taking a position. The same thing also happened in Yahoo, which begs the question... is Mr. Icahn using our Trade Triangle technology or something similar? Poll: Do you think the bank stress test is credible?

The Federal Reserve announced yesterday that 17 of the nation's 18 largest banks could survive a severe economic meltdown. The Federal Reserve estimated that these banks had enough reserve capital to lose upwards of $462 billion dollars and could still survive if the economy were to enter another recession similar to the one we just had.

Of the 18 banks tested by the Fed, only Ally Financial, the former finance arm of General Motors (GM), would sustain big enough losses to potentially put it out of business. All of the other banks would have enough capital to make it through. That leads to today's poll question...

Do you think the bank stress test is credible?

U.S. adds 236K jobs, unemployment falls to 7.7 pct.

A burst of hiring in February added 236,000 U.S. jobs and reduced the unemployment rate to 7.7 percent from 7.9 percent in January. The strong job growth showed that employers are confident about the economy despite higher taxes and government spending cuts.

The February jobs report issued Friday provided encouraging details: The unemployment rate is at its lowest level in four years. Job growth has averaged more than 200,000 a month since November. Wages rose. And the job gains were broad-based, led by the most construction hiring in six years.

The unemployment rate had been stuck at 7.8 percent or above since September. About half the decline in February occurred because more of the unemployed found jobs. A decline in the number of people looking for work accounted for the other half: People who aren't looking for jobs aren't counted as unemployed. Today's Video Newsletter: 3 New Stocks Join the Bull Parade

Hello traders everywhere! Adam Hewison here, co-founder of MarketClub with your mid-day market update for Thursday, the 7th of March.

With the FED pouring $4.25 billion into the system every trading day, it's no wonder that stocks are moving higher. When this artificial demand and false sense of security stops, what will happen to the markets? No one can tell for sure, but we cannot keep pumping money into this market forever. Yesterday, Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia President, Charles Plosser, said “We should begin to taper our asset purchases with an aim of ending them before year-end" and he believes that the central bank should slow the pace of its bond purchases because the potential costs from more stimulus outweigh the benefits.

When the FED turns off the money spigot, watch out!! That's when we get to see if the real economy has any clothes on. Until then, happy days are here again and the bull bandwagon is moving higher courtesy of the FED. Continue reading "Today's Video Newsletter: 3 New Stocks Join the Bull Parade"

FBI joins SEC in computer trading probe

The FBI has joined securities regulators to tackle the potential threat of market manipulation posed by sophisticated computer trading strategies that have taken markets beyond the scope of traditional policing.

FBI agents have joined forces with a new unit within the Securities and Exchange Commission that examines hedge funds and other firms that are using algorithm trading strategies.

The SEC’s Quantitative Analytics Unit is looking at abuses that might arise from the emergence of high-frequency trading firms and the use of dark pool (off exchange) trading. Traders using these methods can manipulate the market by flooding it with quotes, known as quote stuffing, or placing millions of orders that are quickly cancelled, to drive others to trade in ways that benefit their position, a practice known as layering.
