Uncertainty About Bernanke Leads To Weakness

(RTTNews) - After turning in a lackluster performance over the three previous sessions, stocks saw notable weakness during trading on Thursday. Uncertainty ahead of a key speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke contributed to the weakness on Wall Street.

The major averages moved to the downside going into the close, with the S&P 500 ending the day just below 1,400. The S&P 500 fell 11.01 points or 0.8 percent to 1,399.48, while the Dow slid 106.77 points or 0.8 percent to 13,000.71 and the Nasdaq dropped 32.48 points or 1.1 percent to 3,048.71. Daily Video Update: The Dow falls to a three week low, while soybeans move to record highs!

Hello traders everywhere! Adam Hewison here, co-founder of MarketClub with your mid-day market update for Thursday, the 30th of August.

The DOW moved to its lowest level in three weeks, creating a new red weekly Trade Triangle. MarketClub members have not been positive on this particular index, as our monthly Trade Triangle has remained staunchly in the red. Could this index be indicating something is amiss in the markets? The same time the DOW fell to a three week low, the S&P 500 moved below the psychological $1,400 support level.

Over in the commodity markets, soybeans jumped to all time highs and look to go even higher. All of this is contributing to higher costs and inflation pressures in the future. Gold continues to consolidate as we expected, but this is a market you want to be psychologically prepared to buy on any further weakness.

Stocks are making a sharp down move today

Stocks have moved sharply lower over the course of the trading day on Thursday after turning in a lackluster performance over the three previous sessions. Uncertainty about a speech by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is contributing to the weakness on Wall Street.

The major averages have climbed well off their worst levels of the day but remain firmly in negative territory. The Dow is down 98.33 points or 0.8 percent at 13,009.15, the Nasdaq is down 29.17 points or 1 percent at 3,052.02 and the S&P 500 is down 10.38 points or 0.7 percent at 1,400.11. MarketWatch has a piece today on the recent headline making noise out of the GOP about a return to the gold standard.

GOP's Gold Standard Idea Isn't Likely to Shine

"The gold standard, it is argued, would foster economic stability and prosperity, primarily by creating price stability, fixed exchange rates and placing limits government deficit spending as well as trade imbalances. It would also limit credit-driven boom/bust cycles through constraints on the supply of money."

Yes, absolutely.

"Opponents argue that the gold standard would limit the flexibility of governments and central banks in managing economies, restricting the ability to adjust money supply, government budgets and exchange rates. Opponents also point to the inflexibility of the gold standard, which may have contributed to the severity and length of the Great Depression." The U.S. stock indexes closed firmer today

Slightly better economic growth and stronger housing sales nudged the stock market higher Wednesday. The Dow Jones industrial average managed a four-point gain.

The U.S. economy expanded at a 1.7 percent annual rate from April through June thanks to rising consumer spending and exports. That's an improvement from the initial estimate of 1.5 percent, but not enough to put a dent in the unemployment rate.

The National Association of Realtors said its index of sales for previously owned homes increased 2.4 percent in July, reaching its highest level since April 2010, the last month buyers could qualify for a federal tax credit. Continue reading "The U.S. stock indexes closed firmer today" →
