3 Stocks That Avoided Yesterday's Downturn And Deserve Your Attention

Certainly this first trading week in August has been none too kind to the markets. In fact, every major index is lower for the week, along with crude oil, gold and the euro! Not a particularly good start to August as the "death cross" creeps closer to execution. More on that next week.

The good news is there's always markets that are bucking the trend and today I'm going to be looking at three stocks that gave buy signals yesterday despite the drubbing that stocks took.

The first stock that I'm going to be looking at is American Tower Corporation (NYSE:AMT). American Tower Corporation is a real estate investment trust. It invests in real estate markets across the globe. The firm engages in leasing of space on multi-tenant communications sites to wireless service providers, radio and television broadcast companies, wireless data and data providers, government agencies and municipalities and tenants in a number of other industries. American Tower Corporation was founded in 1995 and is headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts.

It doesn't matter if you are a Republican, Democrat or an Independent voter, tonight's debate promises to be both entertaining and unpredictable, all of which make great television. Think of it like reality TV, only this is real, as 10 Republican candidates vie for attention to break out and catch "The Donald."

In today's poll, I'm asking if you are going to watch what promises to be the most-watched political debate in history. I have two questions for you.

Are you watching tonight's Republican debate?

What's Up With Apple?

Since April, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) has lost over $113 billion in share value and is now only up about 3 or 4% for the year.

What is going on in the world's most heavily-held stock?

There are some things in life that cannot be explained. People trying to explain the fall in Apple will present logical reasons why, but the reality is, the market's expectations and perceptions often trump common sense.

Reality check: Apple is still a huge company and still making boat loads of money with over $200 billion in cash sitting offshore. Apple is not going to go out of business anytime soon.

Apple's cash cow is the iPhone. Sales growth, while good, is slowing down as the market becomes saturated. The last big market Apple has to conquer is China and that market is getting to be very competitive. Continue reading "What's Up With Apple?"

New Week, New Month, New Opportunities

It's hard to believe how quickly this summer has passed, but here we are already in August.

Traditionally August is the hottest month of the year, but the question is, will the markets get hot in August and start moving up?

Let's take a look at what happened in July to find out which markets put smiles on investors' faces and which markets led some investors to the poor house.

The biggest loser last month in the major market category is crude oil, which lost an astounding 21.2% for the month of July. The next biggest loser was gold, which must have put a shudder in the spines of the gold bugs (do bugs have spines?).

The euro, while it lost ground, was nothing compared to the other two markets with a mere loss of 1.4%. All three of these markets did nothing to put a smile on investors faces unless they were either short or you had puts in the options market. Gold Futures

Gold futures in the December contract settled last Friday at 1,086 while currently trading at 1,194 experiencing a wild trading session this Friday afternoon with the U.S dollar trading sharply lower as I’ve been recommending a short position in the August contract as we rolled over into the December contract today so continue to place your stop loss above the 10 day high which stands at 1,110 an ounce. Gold futures have traded sideways for the last two weeks and looks to be forming some type of short-term bottom, but I will stick to my trading rules and keep the proper stop loss as I still see no reason to own gold but if we are stopped out move on and look at other markets that are beginning to trend as we have been short from around the 1,170 level as prices have stalled out in recent weeks.
