Into Thin Air...

Into Thin Air is a best-selling non-fiction book of the 1996 Mt. Everest Disaster written by Jon Krakauer. His book was later made into a movie called Everest which gives a chilling visual account of events that took place on the world's tallest mountain. The phrase "into thin air" refers to the altitude and the lack of oxygen at the summit of Mount Everest. Humans can only stay at the summit of Mount Everest for a brief amount of time before the lack of oxygen will cause them to die.

That is sort of how I feel about the markets right now and this particular rally. The major indices without oxygen (in this case, super bullish news) are going to fail. That is how I feel now, but overriding any emotional feeling I have will be the non-emotional Trade Triangles. At the moment, both the Dow and the S&P 500 are indicating a sidelines position. Only the NASDAQ has both the weekly and monthly Trade Triangles indicating a downtrend. Continue reading "Into Thin Air..."

Safe Haven Test: 1+ Year After SNB Shock

Aibek Burabayev - INO.com Contributor - Metals

More than a year ago, on the 15th of January 2015, the market was shocked by the sharp move of the Swiss National Bank (SNB) abandoning the cap of the Swiss franc to the euro. I dedicated a special post to that event. This time, I've made a comparative chart for the period from the start of 2015 until today to show you how the SNB's move affected the safe haven currency for the past 13 months.

The Swiss franc is in an inverse cross here (CHFUSD) to comfort your perception of both assets dynamics against the US dollar.

The shock was short-lived as the currency quickly lost the gains during the first quarter of 2015. The Franc caught up with falling gold in a very tight correlation. They bottomed at the same time in March of 2015 and then reversed to the upside and peaked in May of 2015. The similarity of trends continued with the metal gapping deeper on the drops. Rare short interruptions of the link occurred last December and this month when gold increased its value and the franc didn't. Continue reading "Safe Haven Test: 1+ Year After SNB Shock"

Sometimes No Position Is The Best Position

What do I mean by that?

To put it simply, sometimes being on the sidelines in a cash position can be beneficial to your portfolio. There are times in the market when trends are very clear, whether it be up or down. At the moment when you look at the DOW Index, the Trade Triangle technology is indicating that you should be on the sidelines as the major trend remains down while the intermediate-term trend is positive. Over at the NASDAQ and the S&P 500, you should still be negative on those indices, providing the 4,636.93 and 1947.20 levels are not breached to the upside.

Today could be a very interesting day, we could see the recent upward momentum reverse back down and witness a pullback in the major indices and many stocks that have recently rallied against their longer-term negative trends.

Here are a few of the stocks I'm covering today. Continue reading "Sometimes No Position Is The Best Position"

This Unlikely Stock Is Hitting On All Cylinders

Daniel Cross - INO.com Contributor - Equities

It's no secret – it's a tough market out there. Oil prices are at record lows, the US dollar remains stubbornly strong, and now the Fed has all but admitted that the economy is weaker than expected and we might need to start preparing for negative rates.

In this kind of environment, smaller companies can often slip through the volatility. They can ride the waves of uncertainty and ignore macroeconomic hardships that plague their larger competitors making the smaller one an unlikely winner. If that stock is an industry which is trending higher, that's even better.

One stock in the communications sector is slipping through the noise and could be a huge opportunity for investors. The communications sector is widely viewed as an industry undergoing a rising tide, which as most investors know means it lifts all ships within that industry. Various Markets; Weekly Views

By: Gary Tanashian of NFTRH

It occurs to me that in public writing I tend to bludgeon people with macro fundamentals (like gold vs. positively correlated markets, yield relationships and even confidence in global policy makers), market indicators (VIX, Equity Put/Call, Gold-Silver ratio, Sentiment, Participation, etc.) and other views beneath the surface of things. So much so that I sometimes forget that people might like to see simple nominal charting as a frame of reference.

We update charts like these every week in NFTRH, but I have done relatively few for public review. So here it is, a simple weekly chart update of various markets, with very limited commentary interference from me.

US Stock Market

As you can see, US indexes have so far held critical support. Best projected case would be a bounce to SPX 2000 (+/-). The market continues to roll over on the intermediate trend as of now.

spx, ndx and dow

If the above is suspect to bearish, the broader US indexes are just bearish. Lower lows and lower highs abound and resistance is noted. Continue reading "Various Markets; Weekly Views"
